[ AOE2 CIVILIZATION ]
Ethiopians
Fast-aging foot-archer civ — free +100 food/gold on age-ups, fast-firing archers, and Torsion Engines siege Imperial.
[ IDENTIDAD ]
Ethiopians are the canonical "fast-aging foot archer" civilization. Two ambient economic bonuses — +100 food on entering Feudal and +100 gold on entering Castle — liberate real vil-seconds: you do not need to accumulate those resources, so your age-up click happens with less invested villager time. Their archers fire 18% faster (foot archers and cavalry archers), and Pikemen / Halberdiers also get this attack-rate bonus, which means their ranged armies feel DPS-dense even without extra attack numbers on the unit card. Their Castle-age unique tech Royal Heirs makes Shotel Warriors train almost instantly (~2.7s per Shotel on Castle build), and the Imperial unique tech Torsion Engines expands Mangonel/Onager/Siege Onager splash radius — turning siege engines into AoE nukes. Ethiopians lack Paladin (stop at Cavalier), lack Camel entirely, lack Plate Barding Armor for cavalry, lack Bombard Tower (depends on patch — VERIFY), and have no Redemption in the monastery — but they DO have Thumb Ring, Bracer, Arbalest, Halberdier, Siege Onager, Heavy Scorpion, Hand Cannoneer, and Bombard Cannon. They are a complete late-game civ on foot with world-class siege. The plan: snowball the age-ups into a fast Castle with Pike + Arbalest timing, force engagements before the opponent stabilizes, then transition to Arbalest + Pike + Siege Onager + Bombard Cannon + Trebuchet with Torsion Engines Imperial.
Datos clave
⚡ Civ bonuses
Towers fire 20% faster (applies to all tower types: Watch/Guard/Keep; stacks with allies' tower civs).
Receive +100 food upon reaching Feudal Age (free, automatic).
Effectively accelerates feudal military/tech by ~10-15 seconds. Fuels a tighter 21-pop feudal click and earlier feudal tech/military.
Receive +100 gold upon reaching Castle Age (free, automatic).
Immediate gold for Crossbow upgrade (75 wood, 45 gold), Pikeman, or a first Shotel/Unique castle investment. Saves the equivalent of ~2-3 gold-miner-minutes at Castle Age.
Archers (foot archers AND cavalry archers) fire 18% faster.
Per-second damage from Ethiopian Crossbow/Arbalest is meaningfully higher than any other civ's baseline archer (effectively +18% DPS without attack/range changes). The Archer line is the real civ-defining power unit.
Pikemen / Halberdiers attack 18% faster (same attack-rate bonus extends to the Pikeman line).
Ethiopian Halberdiers are among the best in the game — attack rate bonus compounds with anti-cavalry bonus damage to make them kill cavalry noticeably faster.
- · Paladin — Ethiopian cavalry stops at Cavalier. Their Cavalier is a viable raider but never a main-line Imperial unit. Must rely on foot archer + pike + siege for Imperial.
- · Plate Barding Armor — [VERIFY — believed missing] further weakens already-limited Cavalier line; cavalry take more damage vs ranged attacks.
- · Camel line (entire) — No camels at all — in Imperial vs opposing cavalry, Ethiopia answers with Halberdier + Arbalest + Siege Onager, never with Camel mirror.
- · Redemption — Monastery lacks Redemption; cannot convert siege/rams/castles. Monks are support-only, never a primary tool.
- · Heresy — [VERIFY — believed missing] means converted units die instead of flipping; less painful than lacking Redemption but still a monk-war weakness.
- · Bombard Tower — [VERIFY — believed missing on current patch; Ethiopia has BBC but may lack BBT. Weakens late-game defensive fortification.]
- · Hussar — [VERIFY — Ethiopians stop at Light Cavalry in some patches; believed Hussar IS available on current patch]. If missing: trash-war late game is worse.
Guerrero Shotel
glass-cannon fast-attack infantry (castle unique unit)
- · Fast-attack anti-infantry hammer — high base attack per swing + fast attack rate in swarm
- · Castle-drop flood with Royal Heirs — near-instant training yields surprise mass
- · Back-line anti-infantry support in an Arb+Pike+Shotel imperial comp
Herederos Reales
Shotel Warriors are trained almost instantly (~3x faster, approx 8s → ~2.7s).
When: Only when planning a Shotel-flood opener or anti-meta castle drop. Skip in standard Arb+Pike builds.
Motores de Torsión
Mangonel-line (Mangonel, Onager, Siege Onager) splash radius significantly increased.
When: Imperial, immediately after Siege Onager upgrade. First-priority siege tech in Imperial.
🎯 Recommended build order
Archer Rush + Forward Castle Option
Bracket 1300-1600Decide at ~15-17min between defensive second-TC boom or forward castle drop leveraging Royal Heirs Shotel option. Based on map and opponent.

❌ Common mistakes playing Ethiopians
-
▸
Not researching Fletching in Feudal
Fletching is +1 archer attack/range/LOS. Ethiopia's fire rate advantage compounds with upgrades — skipping Fletching leaves archers underpowered.
fix:Fletching first click when +100 food lands on Feudal. Non-negotiable.
▸Over-walling and forgetting production
Walls are important but spending 3 minutes walling loses military tempo. Ethiopia wants to press the age-up advantage.
fix:Wall with 2-3 villagers max while others keep producing food/gold.

⚠️ Skipping Thumb Ring
→ Thumb Ring in Castle Age, right after Bodkin. Non-negotiable.
❌ Not upgrading Arbalest on Imperial click
Next match: Standard 21-pop archer rush → Castle ~15:30-17:00 → Crossbow + Bodkin + Thumb Ring first, then Arbalest when Imperial timing shortens → first castle at ~20-24min for Shotel option or forward pressure → Imperial ~30-32min with Bracer, Arbalest, Siege Onager, Torsion Engines priority. Comp: Arb + Pike + SO + Ram.

Anti-siege bonus + cav archer speed + Parthian Tactics kite Ethiopian Arbalest.
Out-ranges Skirm without Bracer; kites foot archers.
Cav + dismount infantry hybrid; Stirrups speed; no Ethiopian Paladin mirror.
Tanks Arbalest DPS; requires Halb + Siege mass to counter.
Ranged anti-cavalry infantry; castle-drop threat; gold-heavy elite unit.
Bonus vs infantry destroys Pike + Halb line; Pike screen falls.
