[ AOE2 CIVILIZATION ]

Armenians

Infantry/navy hybrid with a unique Fortified Church landmark, Warrior Priests that fight AND heal, and a surprisingly deep Composite Bowman anti-archer option.

Tier A-on-average (S on Arena / closed; B on Arabia; D on Nomad) infantry navy hybrid warrior priest composite bowman

[ IDENTIDAD ]

Armenians are a hybrid civ that looks conventional on paper but plays nothing like a standard archer or cavalry civ. Their unique "Fortified Church" is built instead of a standard monastery, reveals the map at the start of the game, and enables the Warrior Priest — a unit that melee-attacks, converts like a monk, and heals adjacent units while it does either. Their second unique unit, the Composite Bowman, is an archer trained from the Archery Range that hits harder than a Crossbowman against other archers and skirmishers, giving the civ a real Castle Age foot archer option despite lacking Arbalester-tier scale. Eco-side, they gather +50% wood from buildings they cut down (palisades, houses, even enemy buildings), which is a hybrid-map dream and turns wall-breaking into a resource gain. Their cap is Cavalier rather than Paladin, but they have Hussar, Halberdier, Champion, and Arbalester — a more complete tech tree than Franks. Navally, Cilician Fleet gives galleons +15 HP and +2 attack, and all warships can convert enemy ships. The meta read: a solid B on Arabia (~49% WR), an A on Arena and hybrid/closed maps (~53-54% WR), and one of the worst Nomad civs in the game (~36% WR).

⚡ Civ bonuses

Team bonus

Fortified Church technologies are 50% cheaper for Armenian players (and researched faster for allies) [VERIFY exact wording].

Unique bonus #1

Villagers gather +50% wood from buildings they chop down (palisades, houses, enemy or own structures).

A standard 50-wood palisade yields 75 wood when cut. A 150-wood house yields 225 wood. Wall-breaking campaigns generate eco rather than consuming it.

Unique bonus #2

Map is revealed at game start when the Fortified Church (unique landmark, replaces Monastery) is built.

Not line-of-sight — actual MAP reveal showing terrain/resources/water. Fog of war remains for enemy unit positions but the map shape is known.

Unique bonus #3

Warships (Galley line, Fire Ship line, Demo Ship line) can convert enemy ships.

Galleons fire special projectile that has a chance to convert on hit. Cannot convert Fishing Ships, Transport Ships, or Trade Cogs [VERIFY exact scope].

Unique bonus #4

Barracks and Dock units cost -10 wood [VERIFY — may be an indirect effect of Mountain Royals bonuses].

[VERIFY] — sources conflict on whether Armenians have a direct unit-cost bonus; the Mountain Royals DLC patch notes include villager-cost adjustments that affect production.

⚠️ Key tech the civ DOES NOT have
  • · PaladinArmenians cap at Cavalier. Knights are a raiding/flex tool, not a main army. Pair with Warrior Priest for HP regen in Imperial paladin mirrors vs Franks, Lithuanians, etc.
  • · Siege OnagerStop at Onager — Imperial siege push limited vs turtled bases.
  • · Heavy Scorpion[VERIFY — Armenians believed to lack Heavy Scorpion; removes scorpion as a positional option]
  • · Ring Archer Armor[VERIFY — Armenians believed to have Ring Archer Armor, unlike Franks. Composite Bowman benefits if present.]
  • · Bloodlines[VERIFY — believed HAS Bloodlines; if missing, cavalry is even weaker]
  • · Plate Barding Armor[VERIFY — uncertain in current patch]
🛡️ Unique unit · Castle Age

Arquero Compuesto

anti-archer foot archer; trains at Archery Range (unique among unique units)

  • · Castle Age anti-archer — bonus damage flips archer mirrors
  • · Screen in front of Warrior Priest + infantry comp
  • · Trained from Archery Range (no castle gating) — enables M@A → Composite rushes on Arabia
🛡️ Unique unit · Castle Age

Sacerdote Guerrero

melee + heal + convert hybrid; cannot pick up relics (monks still do)

  • · Melee frontline in low-numbers engagements (heals itself + allies)
  • · Conversion wars vs other monk civs (Aztecs, Spanish)
  • · Keeps infantry army 'always healed' in Imperial
⚗️ Unique tech · Castle Age

Fereters

Infantry and Cavalry regenerate HP at a slow rate. Warrior Priests gain a faith/healing bonus [VERIFY exact mechanic].

When: Castle Age late — after first Warrior Priest batch and Forging are done. On Arena, often researched as the pre-Imperial pivot tech.

⚗️ Unique tech · Imperial Age

Flota Ciliciana

Galleons gain +15 HP and +2 attack.

When: Imperial, after committing to naval dominance. Combined with the native Armenian warship-conversion bonus, Cilician Fleet Galleons become one of the strongest capital ships in the game.

🎯 Recommended build order

M@A + Scouts Flex into Warrior Priest

Bracket 1300-1600

Decide at ~12min between M@A aggression or Scout-into-Archer depending on opponent's open.

❌ Common mistakes playing Armenians

  • Forgetting to build the Fortified Church

Without Fortified Church, no Warrior Priests, no map reveal, no unique tech unlocks. Armenians become a mid-tier civ with no identity.

fix:Fortified Church is a priority CLICK the moment you reach Castle Age. Queue the stone and foundation BEFORE castle click.

Trying to build multiple Fortified Churches

Only ONE Fortified Church is allowed per game. Trying to queue a second wastes wood and eco tempo.

fix:Build ONE Fortified Church. After that, standard Monasteries for additional Warrior Priest / Monk production.

    Not using the map reveal

Armenians see the whole map from minute 0 (once church is up). Not looking at opponent position / gold / stone wastes the bonus.

fix:Immediately after Fortified Church completes, pan the camera to opponent's position + resources. Plan around this info.

🛡️ Cuidado con estas unidades

Siege Onager (Celts, Ethiopians, Mongols, Khmer) HIGH

AoE damage clears clumped Warrior Priests + Composite Bowmen; Armenians lack Siege Onager to counter.

Paladin (Franks, Lithuanians, Burgundians, Spanish, Persians) MEDIUM-HIGH

Armenian cap at Cavalier — lose Imperial cavalry mirror.

Huskarl (Goths) MEDIUM

Archer-immune infantry; Composite Bowman bonus muted. Must pivot to Halberdier + Onager.

Leitis (Lithuanians) MEDIUM

Ignores melee armor; Halberdier counter less effective. Composite Bowman + Warrior Priest primary answer.

Heavy Camel / Imperial Camel (Hindustanis, Berbers) MEDIUM

Armenian cavalry lacks camel counter. Halberdier is the only answer.

Hussite Wagon + Houfnice (Bohemians) MEDIUM

Gunpowder + wagon counter infantry + priest clumps.
