Bengalis are the archetypal "survive-and-scale" civ. Their feudal is unremarkable — no scout bonus, no archer bonus, no military discount — so they must wall, defend, and reach Castle Age. Once there, the civ's identity unlocks: Rathas (the Castle UU) can toggle between melee and ranged modes and are buildable from the Stable (not just the Castle), giving Bengalis a flexible cavalry answer without committing to a Castle drop. Villagers get +0.25 food per shepherd work cycle (the civ's signature eco bonus) and free farm upgrades (Horse Collar, Heavy Plow, Crop Rotation auto-researched), which makes their food eco one of the smoothest in the game. Elephants — both Battle Elephants and Elephant Archers — resist conversion, making them uniquely monk-resistant where most civs' elephant lines fold to monastery civs. The team bonus (monks heal 2× as fast) makes them a coveted teammate for any monk/elephant composition. Their late game leverages Paiks (UT: melee cavalry speed boost) and Mahayana (UT: villagers cost less population) for a snowballing Imperial. The weaknesses are deliberate: no Champions, no Arbalest, no Hussar (Cavalier only), no Heated Shot, no Siege Onager — the civ leans into Rathas + Elephants + Monks and cannot improvise easily if that plan fails.

❌ Common mistakes playing Bengalis

  • Under-walling feudal

    Bengalis have no feudal military bonus — walls are the ONLY defense against scout rushes, drushes, and M@A. Without walls, villagers die before Castle Age arrives.

    fix:Palisade front and gold flank by minute 14. Use 2-3 villagers on walling; they return to resources after.

    Producing Rathas but never switching modes

    The Ratha's entire design premise is mode-switching. Playing it as a single-mode unit wastes half the unit's value.

    fix:Practice hotkey toggle. Ranged mode for raiding villagers; melee mode for closing on archers.
