[ AOE2 CIVILIZATION ]
Malians
West African flex civ — pierce-armor buildings, cheap University tech, and a Gbeto + Farimba-Cavalier late game.
[ IDENTIDAD ]
Malians are one of AoE2's most flexible "second-tier" civilizations — rarely S-tier, consistently viable on every map. Their signature bonuses interlock in a toolbox pattern rather than forcing a single strategy. Buildings gain +1 pierce armor in Feudal, +2 in Castle, +3 in Imperial, which means Towers, TCs, Castles, and even Houses shrug off archer fire and scout harassment far better than other civs — a forgiving feudal and a formidable turtle in Castle. University tech costs -33%, which makes Murder Holes, Ballistics, Arrowslits, Chemistry, Masonry, Architecture, and Siege Engineers all cheap enough to stack — pair with the strong Castle and the pierce-armor bonus and Malian defensive structures are among the best in the game. Gold miners work +15% faster (Feudal forward), sustaining gold-hungry unit compositions including the Gbeto. The team bonus is +15% wood chopping speed for allies — one of the strongest team eco bonuses in the game, making Malians a popular team pick regardless of their individual bracket position. Military-wise, Malians reach full Champion and Pikeman; the Barracks line gains Gbeto-adjacent support (fast, thrown-weapon infantry) from the Castle via the UU. Cavalry stops at Cavalier (no Paladin) but Farimba, the Imperial unique tech, adds +5 attack to all Stable units — turning Malian Cavalier and Light Cavalry into tech-raided hammer units. The Archery Range is a weakness: no Arbalester, no Ring Archer Armor — archers are purely a supplementary screen. Siege stops at Onager (no Siege Onager) and Heavy Scorpion; they do have Bombard Cannon.
Datos clave
⚡ Civ bonuses
University technologies researched 80% faster. Wait — verify exact wording: canonical Malian team bonus is 'University technologies researched 80% faster' OR '+15% wood chopping speed for allies' depending on patch. [VERIFY current 169123 in-game tooltip.]
Buildings have +1 pierce armor in Feudal Age, +2 in Castle Age, +3 in Imperial Age (cumulative).
Towers, Castles, Town Centers, Houses, and walls shrug off archer/crossbow/skirm/archer-uu damage. A Malian Castle takes 30-50% less pierce damage from arrow fire at each age threshold.
University technologies cost -33% (research in some sources cite +80% faster research; canonical effect is cost reduction).
Murder Holes, Ballistics, Masonry, Architecture, Arrowslits, Heated Shot, Chemistry, Siege Engineers, Bracer, Fortified Wall, Treadmill Crane all cost 33% less. Saves 400-800 resources over a full tech pass.
Gold miners work +15% faster starting in Feudal Age (some patches list +10%, most recent list +15%).
More gold per vil-minute. Sustains gold-heavy compositions like Gbeto spam, Cavalier+Farimba, and heavy University tech research.
Barracks units cost -15% wood (some sources list -10%).
Men-at-Arms, Pikemen, Champions, Spearmen, and Halberdier all cost slightly less wood. Small bonus but compounds through mass infantry compositions.
- · Arbalester — Malians stop at Crossbowman — archer line is a secondary unit at best. Never a primary army composition.
- · Ring Archer Armor — Crossbowmen are -1 pierce armor vs opposing archers. Archer mirrors are lost unless Malian has significant numerical advantage.
- · Paladin — Cavalry stops at Cavalier. Farimba (+5 attack) is the compensating Imperial tech but Cavalier has less HP than Paladin in sustained fights.
- · Siege Onager — Stops at Onager. Siege push lane is weaker than Celts/Ethiopians/Koreans; must rely on Bombard Cannon + Onager mix.
- · Heavy Scorpion — [VERIFY — most sources say Malians DO have Heavy Scorpion. Cross-check patch 169123.]
- · Bloodlines — [VERIFY — Malians BELIEVED to have Bloodlines; this is standard for most cavalry-capable civs. Confirm.]
- · Plate Barding Armor — [VERIFY — Malians may lack the top cavalry armor upgrade; confirm on patch 169123.]
- · Bracer — [VERIFY — Malians BELIEVED to have Bracer, since they have full University tech tree focus. Confirm.]
- · Halberdier — [VERIFY — Malians BELIEVED to have Halberdier. Pikeman-only would be significant. Confirm.]
Gbeto
fast thrown-weapon infantry; ranged-type infantry attack with high speed and damage but fragile body
- · Anti-archer harass — ranged attack trades very well vs crossbows/skirms
- · Raid eco in Castle Age — fast move speed lets Gbetos reach woodlines before defenders respond
- · Snipe monks + villagers + lone siege units
Tigui
Town Centers fire arrows even when not garrisoned.
When: Castle Age, after the second TC goes up. Timing ~18-20min on a standard open-map build. If the opponent is a raid-heavy civ (Mongol, Hun, Tatar, Magyar), prioritize Tigui immediately after Castle click.
Farimba
All Stable units gain +5 attack (Knight line, Scout line, Camel line, Hussar).
When: First or second click after Imperial. Farimba before the second round of Cavalier upgrades. If the Imperial game is trash-war (post-gold-out), Farimba on Hussar is the trash-war Imperial finisher.
🎯 Recommended build order
Flex Opener with Matchup-Specific Castle Age
Bracket 1300-1600Choose opener based on scouting — M@A vs archer civs, scout vs boom civs, drush vs cav civs. Castle Age composition tailored to opponent.
Alternativa
Forward Castle Gbeto Rush — Unwalled opponent scouted, aim is Castle Age tempo kill
❌ Common mistakes playing Malians
-
▸
Trying to play Malians as an archer civ
Malians have no Arbalester and no RAA. Archer line is a dead end; Malian xbow is support-only.
fix:Default to scout + M@A feudal into Gbeto (vs archer civ) or Cavalier (vs cav civ). Only build archery range as xbow screen.
▸Skipping Tigui
Tigui is one of the cheapest and most impactful Castle-age UTs — free TC arrows add huge raid defense for Malian open-map play.
fix:Tigui researched immediately after second TC up, typically ~19-20min.
