[ AOE2 CIVILIZATION ]

Portuguese

Gunpowder + Navy hybrid with a -15% gold discount on every unit and a one-of-a-kind trickle-income building.

Tier B (1v1 average) / A-S (water/hybrid maps) gunpowder naval eco boom trickle building

[ IDENTIDAD ]

Portuguese are the gunpowder+navy hybrid civilization. Every unit they train costs -15% gold (the unique civ bonus), which compounds over a full game into a free third gold pile's worth of income. Their roster emphasizes ranged gunpowder and naval dominance: the Organ Gun (Castle UU) is a gunpowder siege unit firing multiple projectiles per volley — lethal vs clumped infantry and archers. The Caravel (Dock UU) is a ranged ship with penetrating attack (one arrow can pierce multiple enemies in a line), making Portuguese among the strongest naval civs in the game. In Imperial, the Feitoria becomes available — an 8-population, 20,000-cost [VERIFY] building that trickles all four resources per minute without villagers, letting Portuguese transition into "zero-economy" late-game mode. Their team bonus is +2 Line of Sight for all units — a quality-of-life scouting buff for the whole team. Missing pieces: no Paladin, no Halberdier, no Heavy Camel, no Heavy Scorpion [VERIFY], and Siege Onager is absent — Portuguese lean entirely on Bombard Cannon + Organ Gun for siege. Their cavalry stops at Cavalier. On open maps they are a scaling eco civ; on water maps they are oppressive; on closed maps their late-game Feitoria + BBC composition is among the strongest positional comps in the game.

⚡ Civ bonuses

Team bonus

All units gain +2 Line of Sight.

Unique bonus #1

All units (military) cost -15% gold.

A Knight costing 60 food + 75 gold becomes 60 food + 64 gold (-11 gold). An Arbalester at 25 wood + 45 gold becomes 25 wood + 38 gold. Across ~200 military units built in a full game this equals ~1500-2200 gold saved, roughly equivalent to a free third gold pile of income.

Unique bonus #2

Free Cartography from the start of the game (shared map with allies visible in team games).

In team games, ally explored terrain + unit positions are visible from minute 0. No research cost, no Market needed. In 1v1 this bonus is inactive (no allies) but free from Feudal onward [VERIFY whether triggers in 1v1 at all].

Unique bonus #3

Feitoria (unique Imperial building) trickles all four resources without villagers.

Cost: 20,000 resources total [VERIFY exact breakdown — commonly listed as 250 food / 250 wood / 250 gold / 250 stone per resource or similar high cost]. Provides approximately 1.6 food, 1 wood, 0.7 gold, 0.3 stone per second [VERIFY rates]. Requires 8 population. Unlocked at Imperial Age.

Unique bonus #4

Dock technologies (Gillnets, Careening, Dry Dock, Shipwright) are researched 25% faster and cost less [VERIFY].

[VERIFY exact effect — some sources describe as 'Dock technologies cost -50%'; older community sources describe as 'researched 25% faster']. Portuguese docks are consequently the most efficient in the game.

⚠️ Key tech the civ DOES NOT have
  • · PaladinPortuguese stop at Cavalier. Cavalry is a Castle-Age support unit, not a game-ender.
  • · HalberdierStop at Pikeman. Anti-cav trash late-game is weak — must rely on Cavalier + BBC + Organ Gun to stop opponent cavalry.
  • · Heavy Camel RiderNo camels at all. No anti-cavalry heavy option; forced to use Pikeman + gunpowder + Cavalier trades.
  • · Heavy Scorpion[VERIFY] — Portuguese believed to LACK Heavy Scorpion; Scorpion line stops at base Scorpion.
  • · Siege OnagerSiege workshop Mangonel line stops at Onager — no Siege Onager. Must substitute with BBC and Organ Gun for AoE splash.
  • · Siege Ram[VERIFY] — Ram line may stop at Capped Ram or go to Siege Ram; confirm. Several sources disagree.
  • · Parthian Tactics[VERIFY] — cavalry archer line is secondary for Portuguese; confirm Parthian Tactics availability.
  • · Bracer[VERIFY] — believed to be available (Portuguese have most university techs).
🛡️ Unique unit · Castle Age

Arcabuz / Arma de Órgano

gunpowder siege unit with multi-projectile volley fire

  • · Behind Knight/Cavalier screen — Organ Guns pick off archers and infantry clumps
  • · Anti-mass unit: multi-projectile fire shreds clustered crossbows / Arbalests
  • · Stand-and-deliver compositions — fire from forward position with Cavalier frontline
🛡️ Unique unit · Castle (Dock) Age

Carabela

ranged warship with penetrating/pass-through attack

  • · Anti-galley line dominance — pass-through attack punishes clumped galleys
  • · Naval front-line when paired with Fast Fire Ships for close engagement
  • · Coastal raid support — Caravels + Cannon Galleon support land pushes
⚗️ Unique tech · Castle Age

Carraca

All ships gain +1 melee armor and +1 pierce armor.

When: Castle Age, immediately after reaching a competitive naval mass. On Islands/Team Islands, researched the moment 6-8 galleys/caravels are in production.

⚗️ Unique tech · Imperial Age

Arcabuz

Ballistics applies to gunpowder units: Hand Cannoneer, Bombard Cannon, Cannon Galleon, and Organ Gun. Projectiles lead moving targets instead of rolling to hit.

When: Imperial, first or second click after reaching Imperial if committing to gunpowder. Sometimes delayed 1-2 techs on Arena when Elite Organ Gun / BBC upgrade itself is higher priority.

🎯 Recommended build order

FC Flex: Cavalier + Organ Gun or Arbalester + Pike

Bracket 1300-1600

Decide opener based on opponent scouted. Cavalier+Organ Gun vs archer civ; Arbalest+Pike vs cav civ.

Alternativa

Organ Gun Castle DropOpponent is passive archer or infantry civ; scouted without Mangonel

❌ Common mistakes playing Portuguese

  • Trying to play Portuguese aggressively in Feudal

Portuguese have no Feudal military bonus. Aggressive Feudal commits waste the eco scaling advantage.

fix:Play defensively: walls + minimal military + boom to Castle. Your spike is Castle-Age Organ Gun + Imperial gunpowder.

    Building Feitoria in Castle Age

Feitoria is Imperial-only. Attempting earlier is impossible (tech-gated).

fix:Memorize: Feitoria unlocks in Imperial Age. Don't queue it until you click Imperial.

Siege Onager (Celts, Ethiopians, Koreans) HIGH

AoE range + speed out-sieges Portuguese (no Siege Onager).

Paladin (Franks, Persians, Teutons, Lithuanians, Burgundians) HIGH

No Halberdier, no Heavy Camel — Paladin mass out-trades Portuguese Cavalier + Pike.

Mangudai + Siege Ram (Mongols) HIGH

Out-kites Portuguese cavalry + gunpowder; Drill-boosted rams out-push.

Condottiero (Italians) MEDIUM

Anti-gunpowder infantry; bonus damage vs Hand Cannoneer / Organ Gun.

Monk swarm (Aztecs, Spanish, Lithuanians) MEDIUM

Converts Organ Gun (70+ gold each) and BBC (~300 gold); decisive gold swing.

Obuch (Poles) MEDIUM

Reduces enemy armor — bleeds Portuguese Cavalier + Organ Gun durability.
