Black Forest

The forest-maze closed map — dense woods enclose every base, narrow choke-lanes connect players, Fast Castle + trash war dominate.

[ MAP IDENTITY ]

Black Forest is the original AoE2 closed map — a continent of dense, thick forest with each player's base carved out as a clearing. Unlike Arena (a neat rectangular tree ring around each player), Black Forest is a forest-maze: each player's clearing connects to opponents through narrow lanes cut through the trees, typically 6-12 tiles wide. The forest is so thick (15-25+ tiles of continuous woodline between bases) that no Dark Age or Feudal aggression is possible — scout paths between bases take 60-90 seconds one-way even when a clear choke exists, and the natural woodlines cannot be cut through meaningfully until siege arrives in Castle Age. As a result, the "opening" on Black Forest is really a Castle-Age-or-later plan: Fast Castle booms, Knight/Unique-Unit spam, Monk + Siege pushes, castle drops at the choke, and eventually the legendary Black Forest trash-war lategame where gold runs out and Pikemen/Halberdier/Hussar/Skirmisher armies trade for 30+ minutes.

Strategic thesis

"Economy and tech depth beat aggression. The player with the stronger boom, unique unit, and trash composition wins. Map control reduces to two questions: who holds the forest choke, and who breaks out first?"

🎯 Strategic pillars

Pillar #1

Close the choke on time, then forget Dark Age

The choke-close is the ONLY Dark Age task that matters. Once walled, there is no pressure.

action: First idle villager in Dark Age: walk to the choke, palisade 6-12 tiles to seal it. Total time <90s of 1-vil labor. Make it a muscle-memory habit.

Pillar #2

Commit to a Castle-Age plan in Feudal

BF gives you free time. Use it to pre-commit to a specific plan (FC Knights, FC Xbow, FC Monk+Siege, Castle Drop, Fast Imp) and execute precisely. Indecision costs 60-90s of Castle Age.

action: By minute 10 (Feudal up), you should know: am I doing FC-Knights, FC-Xbow, FC-Monks, Castle Drop, or Fast Imp? Adjust Feudal tasks (stone mining vs no stone; gold mining priorities) accordingly.

Pillar #3

Tech over numbers in Castle Age

Closed-map fights are won by composition and upgrades, not raw count. 20 Elite-upgraded Xbows beat 30 vanilla Xbows. 15 Paladins beat 25 Knights. BF rewards upgrade commitment.

action: Commit to upgrades (Bloodlines, Plate Barding, Fletching, Bodkin, Bracer, Elite-UU) before mass. Skipping upgrades to pump units is an Arabia habit that fails on BF.

Pillar #4

Fight relics, not just armies

5 relics on BF generate up to 150 gold/minute at max. Over a 40+ minute BF game, this is 3000-6000 extra gold — easily game-deciding. Skipping monks while opponent collects is slow-death.

action: Monastery + 3-5 monks out of Castle Age is default. Push monks through the choke by minute 22-24. Count relics every 3 minutes — 3+ = winning economy; 2 or fewer = plan early trash transition.

🚀 Dominant openings

Fast Castle into Knights / Unique Unit

Standard FC (~15:30-17:00 Castle time), straight to Stables or Castle, produce Knights/Paladin or unique unit. Push through choke at minute 20-24 with upgraded cavalry/UU. Wall the choke with palisade + stone + gate during Castle Age.

Fast Castle Xbow / Archer Transition

FC → Archery Range → Crossbows with Fletching/Bodkin/Bracer. Push choke at minute 22-26 with upgraded Xbows. Britons Longbows and Mayans Plumed Archers are the signature ranged-unit choke pushes.

Fast Castle Monk + Siege

FC → Monastery + Siege Workshop → 5-8 monks + 2-4 mangonels pushed through choke for relics and wall-crack. Decisive by minute 27-30. BF's relic-in-pocket layout rewards this plan especially.

Fast Imperial Turks / Portuguese

FC with minimal 2nd TC, beeline Imperial at ~24-27 min. Bombard Cannons + Hand Cannoneers crash opponent's choke wall. Turks Free Chemistry is ~60s faster to BBC than any other civ. Slightly slower than Arena due to BF's thicker forest delaying secondary stone.

❌ Common mistakes on Black Forest

  • Not closing the choke in Dark Age

A 6-12 tile palisade takes <90s. Leaving it open on the rare seeds with an early-reachable choke invites feudal denial.

fix:First idle villager in Dark Age: walk to the choke, palisade it shut. Practice this until it's muscle memory.

Trying to rush / scout aggression in Feudal

BF neuters Feudal aggression entirely. Scouting / Militia push wastes resources and falls behind in eco.

fix:Trust the map. Go Fast Castle by default. 'Scout rush on Black Forest' is a meme for a reason.

    Not mining stone in Feudal

Every BF plan eventually wants stone (choke wall upgrade, 2nd/3rd TC, castle drop). Low-bracket players skip stone entirely and lack it when needed.

fix:Minimum 2-3 vils on stone during Feudal. Pre-mine 200-300 stone for Castle Age castle + 2nd TC.

Building lumber camps in wrong orientations

BF's unlimited wood only helps if vil walk paths are short. Diagonal lumber camps across the clearing waste 10-15s per trip.

fix:Build lumber camps flush against the forest edge on the closest tree tile. Prefer multiple small lumber camps over one big one.

Which ones did YOU make in your last match on this map?

🧱 Amurallado de base

Dificultad: trivial

Tiempo: <90s of 1-vil labor — the choke closes with 6-12 palisade tiles; rest of perimeter is already forest

1 primary choke; occasionally 1 small flank shortcut

💰 Gold positions

FRONT_EXPOSED

Gold sits on the approach to the choke. Post-Castle-Age, very raideable.

FLANK_REACHABLE

Gold on a side flank in a forest pocket. Reachable with a short forest shortcut.

BACK_SAFE

Gold behind your base or in a deep forest pocket. Ideal position.
